Clay County Historic Preservation Commission
Book Signing - Oct 5, 2008
The Clay County Historical Society is proud to announce the publication of a new, comprehensive history of Vermillion. From the River Valleys to the Rising Bluff: A Pictorial History of Vermillion, South Dakota 1859-2009 has just been received and is now available for sale. Written by local historian Tom Thaden with the assistance from fellow members Cleo Erickson and Joe Reedy, this book provides pictures and details of a Vermillion that many have never experienced or known before. The hardcover book consists of 304 pages and has 624 pictures covering the many different facets of life in Vermillion. Many of the pictures have never been published before and provide a new view of life in Vermillion over the past 150 years. According to the editor, it is an extraordinary book that is very well written and organized with photos that are of excellent quality.
Publication was made possible through a generous donation to the Clay County Historical Society by Margaret Sletwold. All proceeds from the book will raise funds for the further activities of the Historical Society to preserve the past for the future generations of Clay County. At only $35.00, this book is a steal and will make a great gift for anyone with past or present connections to Vermillion. Copies will be sold at both the Austin-Whittemore House and at the W.H. Over Museum. Tom, Cleo, and Joe will all be present for a book signing to be held at the museum from 2-5 pm on Sunday, October 5th. Refreshments will be served during the signing and all who attend are also invited to look around the museum.
Created specifically for Vermillion’s Sesquicentennial, this book is a limited edition and is one that will be treasured for generations. The topics covered in the book include life in the city before the flood of 1881, city and county government, education (both Vermillion public schools and USD), religion, everyday life, street scenes, community gatherings, having fun, agriculture and manufacturing, different businesses over the years, and Vermillion landmarks. In each chapter, there is a brief introduction followed by the historical pictures with captions describing them. Rest assured you will learn quite a bit about the city that you never knew or expected before and you might even find a picture with yourself in it. You won’t know, though, unless you purchase a copy and see for yourself.
